Black Gold

And on we roll... - May 24, 2010

It's been a great 2010 so far and I've been staying very busy. As you know, I've been working with the Kevin Phariss Band and getting to play with some Tulsa music legends regularly. I've also been getting to work with David Thayer. David is a bandleader, singer, and great guitarist who's played with many BIG names in country music. We've been doing some fun gigs covering all sorts of classic rock, blues, country, and r&b and it's an honor to get the call!

The new album is about halfway complete and the remaining half is mostly done already as well. I go on the road this week with the KPB and once I return I expect to get the album done and off to print in about 2 weeks.

I can't wait! If you're in the Little Rock, Arkansas or Memphis areas, the KPB band will be there this Friday and Sat. I know we're at the VFW in Little Rock on Friday night (7ish?) and need to get the details on the Memphis gig, but we'll be there.

Look for us or drop me an email if you need more info!!

Hope all is well~

I'm touched! - April 15, 2010

So back in 2006 I released an album called "Stranded In Babylon". I was/am very proud of that album and all the opportunities it brought me. Multiple national festivals, some 300 college/internet/and major radio stations had it in rotation, sales all over the planet, the chance to play with many talented musicians, travel, and much much more. It also allowed for my trio to play two shows during SXSW in Austin in I think 2007.
Anyway, every year (at least recently?) the Urban Tulsa holds an essay contest to send one lucky and promising music writer to Austin for SXSW to cover the event. This year my friend Brandy Stoner entered the contest and was super awesome enough to use me and the album (even after all these years!!) as her backdrop for her wonderfully written piece. I thought I'd share it with you all as I'm touched that she thought of me and because Brandy is great with words!
Enjoy!

From Brandy:

Greetings! I wrote an entry for the SXSW contest for Urban Tulsa Weekly, on the subject of which local band we think most deserved to be on a stage at SXSW and why, as well as about our love for music, in 500 words. I did not win. It was not the entry they were seeking, but I thought you might like to have a copy of the piece.

SXSW – Brandy Stoner – “Adam Lopez Band”

A discussion about one’s love of music can easily grow esoteric. I’ll try not to get too “profound.” Music is a sister to poetry in a way that it isn’t to math, and words are my favorite thing.

William Carlos Williams said, “It is difficult/to get the news from poems/yet men die miserably every day for lack of what is found there.”

Music, like poetry, is used to teach, ease, excite, and celebrate. It is uniting, divisive, mournful, and inciting. Music is universal language. It replaces the language we lost at the Tower of Babel. Where words fall short, we have song. Songs leave a record of our humanity and our inhumanity.

You can see a soul as much through the music that moves someone as you can by the songs that don’t.

Although the “Adam Lopez Band” – quotations are his, not mine– has gifted Tulsa with newer work since the 15-song Stranded in Babylon, it is the collection “that added some more truth to my diet.” (Bored Of Education, Track 5).

As we listen, we are invited in the next hour to “embrace those that have roots” (Lovers, Track 4) and to “save ourselves, our lovers, and our happy homes.” (Save Ourselves, Track 9) I’m a sucker for a good wordplay, so The Bored Of Education (Track 5) had me from The Bored. Expecting to hear that the young are apathetic, I was inspired to hear Adam’s smooth voice saying that we are tired of what we are being taught, and want to learn the truth. The mighty Babylonian metropolis which we have been told to admire may fall from its glory one day.

My love of language was birthed by the songs and rhymes of childhood. Language is percussive. Consonants are beats and vowels move the melody. The syllables move me. In chapels and arenas, good music sparks the same desire in me as a man who is intense, tender, strong, smart, and a little unpredictable.

I’m Alright (Track 13) is so danceable, one might chant “Yeah hey yeah,” and forget (or not realize) that it’s about not passing on abuse. Connecting with an artist or piece is not only a matter of understanding a message, or a moment. It is a physical experience.

Hips, however, lie closer to the heart than one might think. Song is a sensory experience, born of emotion and imagination. It springs forth in its conception from a single thought, action, or ideal.

When live, Adam is entirely performing, but comes off as if he were the only person in the room. It’s evident in his self-portraits in Babylon’s cover design. The “Adam Lopez Band” captures the freedom of rock without all the frenzy.

The hard guitar of the title track, backed by the strong drums of Pholk Souljah (Track 11) and the soaring end with Soul Music, make Babylon’s call to cease personal and political separations one that can and should be heard at SXSW in Austin this March.

Spring time! - April 14, 2010

Hey all,

it's been awhile since I've updated this thing. Sorry for the lag! I've been keeping pretty busy with the Kevin Phariss Band and my teaching schedule. My trio is back on hold as I'm shuffling around potential players and trying get something that works for everyone. No hurry! I've come to the point where I'd rather be patient and create something that's exactly how I envision it instead of slapping something together and rushing.

We're still hosting the Sunday Jam @ The Cimarron Bar. 4 p.m. every week!

Look for the KPB around Tulsa and into Arkansas and Memphis come Memorial Day weekend.

Also, the new album is still under construction. Again, I want to be patient and do it up right, so of course it's taking far longer than anticipated but I really think we'll have something out there come summer !

Hope all is well,

Adam

Busy busy! - February 10, 2010

Where to start??! First off some of you may have noticed that ConfidentGuitar.com is no longer online. Due to time contraints, I didn't feel I could give it the attention it needs to be worth your time to browse, so I've taken it down for the time being. The lesson videos will remain on the CG YouTube page for now and perhaps a new lesson blog will appear sometime in the future.

One of the reasons  for the discontinuation of CG is that I'm now involved in 2 bands as a full time member. As you already know, I've been hired by the Kevin Phariss Band, and my new trio is up and running.

I've also had my student count start to go back up (about 30 a week). That's a lot on the plate and a TON of songs and lyrics to memorize, but trust me, I ain't complainin' ;)

Life is beautiful and getting to share music with all these great musicians and fans is a blessing!

I'll be debuting with the Kevin Phariss Band this Saturday in Mannford Oklahoma at the VFW.

The Swingin' Chupacabros will be debuting on Feb. 24th at the Blue Dome Diner for a private party (lemme know if you want me to sneak you in ; ).

Hope everyone is well!

Adam

Hello 2010! - January 18, 2010

I hope everyone made it through the holidays and is enjoying the new year! It's already been a year of ups and downs on this end. Most of you don't know, but I've taken the gig with the Kevin Pharris band here in Tulsa. The Kevin Pharris band is a local treasure led by Kevin that features some great musicians including Rocky Frisco on keys (JJ Cale) and Harry Williams on drums (Ike & Tina, Hubert Sumlin,Flash Terry). Both are Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame inductees and Rocky is also an Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame inductee.

These guys have always blown me away with their kindness and acceptance into their local music scene and now that I have a chance to work with them full time I must say that I"M HONORED.

On a sad note, Kevin is currently in the hospital recovering from a stroke. Please pray, hope, think happy thoughts, send mojo, or whatever it is you prefer but please send it!

It's been a rough time lately for many Tulsa musicians health wise and I truly wish them all and everyone all the health and happiness in the world. I hope you do the same ! ;)

Also, my new band looks to be in place and I'm VERY excited to get out and start performing the new tunes as well as some new covers I've always wanted to play.

Look for us out on the local scene very soon; Tim "Ransom" Conner on bass, Gary Davison on drums, and if you're lucky and catch us on the right night, Rocky Frisco on keys!!!!

If you haven't yet, find me on MySpace, Facebook, and ReverbNation as well!

Also, don't forget to check out my new work in progress: ConfidentGuitar.com

Be well!

New album(s) & Guitar Lessons - November 17, 2009

That's right! Album(s). I've had the "new" demo tracks up for some time now and many people are probably wondering where the final cuts are. They are finally being finished and as of now there are a total of 8 tracks on the "completed" list. There's also a bunch more being finished up which will make up one very long album or two separate ones; a vocal album and an instrumental album. At this point I'm not sure in what combo they will be released, however they WILL both be released at the same time.

Stay tuned!!

Also, many of you know that when I'm not performing/writing/recording, or practicing, that I'm also teaching. I've recorded a few online "lessons" recently and have had a good response. Granted, these lessons were strictly experimental on my end to see how the format worked for me and others, so the audio/visual quality is understandably mediocre. The positive response however has led me to pursue the formation of my own guitar school which will begin with an upgrade in the quality of these online lessons. Ideas are still being bounced around and nothing is concrete just yet, but look for new higher quality lessons soon!

R.I.P. Rick Potter - October 22, 2009

Sad news this week as Mr. Rick Potter has passed on. Rick was highly regarded expert tube amp builder, repair artist, and wizard. Rick Potter is the "R.P." in my "RPM" amp. He was also a great guitar player who remained a working musician right up until he just couldn't physically do it any longer.

I was lucky to have made friends with Rick over the last few years and I will miss him. The last we spoke, he was finishing up dialing in my amp after I had done some gig testing with it. Soon after, he officially retired from amp work. I guess I was lucky enough to get one of his very last pieces of work.

Guys like Rick are something special. The absolute best in their fields, virtually unknown outside of their circle, but there's no doubt that his tone will live on for many more decades. Maybe forever.....

Online Guitar Lessons - October 11, 2009

As some of you know, when I'm not gigging at night, I'm teaching guitar during the day. I've decided to go cyber with the lessons too for fun and for friends! Hope some of you find this helpful, if not, maybe the next one. I had a good time testing this out and look forward to making more. If you have any requests just holler!

Also, look for a whole "Lesson" section here in the menu soon!

Jeff Beguin and the Mojo Dogs - October 5, 2009

Some of may know by now that I'm playing guitar with Jeff Beguin and the Mojo Dogs! Jeff and the Dogs are one of Tulsa's hardest working bands and have let me join them to add some Tele twang to their evolving Honky Tonk/Truck Driving brand of rootsy countrified rock n' roll sizzle! Here's a rough video from my 2nd gig with them. TONS of fun!

Tulsa this weekend! - September 25, 2009

Sorry for the long delays! Life is one big wonderful adventure that sometimes keeps me out of the website updating loop ;)

This weekend if you're in Tulsa, I'll be playing guitar tonight (Friday) with the Mojo Dogs @ The Dixie Tavern @ 9 p.m. We'll be honky tonki some kick ass country/rock/blues. Not sure of the address offhand but surely you're on the interwebz, so you can probably find it.

Saturday I'll be playing guitar for Tulsa's favorite singer/songwriter Steve Liddell and his band at Veteran's Park for Education Rocks. We go on at 2 p.m.!

Hope everyone is well!!

Hahn Guitars, adventure, and new music in the works! - August 2, 2009

Hey everyone! It's been a few weeks. Hope everyone is enjoying the new tunes. I'm currently working on getting more new demos posted asap!

I just got back from a 13 state adventure including a stop in NY to pick up my new Hahn 228 guitar!
I'll be representing for Hahn Guitars to absolute best of my abilities and telling the world about these first class instruments!

www.hahnguitars.com
We also made quite an adventure out of the trip. We drove to make sure we could see some new places and we took our mountain bikes to further explore new places.

We also caught Los Lobos on a cruise around Manhattan and the only thing between us and them was a monitor and a mic stand!

Check out the photo!!
